Chapter Twelve

BRANDON

"What did you find?" I asked as Nathan entered my office.

"Lester met up with Samantha in Placerville. She took him to the house, and he sat on it for a day, then went in and checked it out. It does look like he was holding Katie there. At least for a few days. There was a room set up with a chair and the remains of rope on the wooden arms."

"But she wasn't—" I couldn't bring myself to say what I was thinking.

"No, she wasn't there, dead or alive."

I sighed. "So, what now?"

"Now we wait for the rest of the reports to come in."

"Damn it. All of this has got to be stressing her out. What if she goes into labor?" I asked, worrying about her and our little girl.

"I don't know. Katie's strong though, I think she'll get through it. You have to have hope, Brandon. We've gotten this far."

"I know, I just… it's been over a month," I fretted, running my hand through my auburn hair.

"Yeah, well, I'm working with a handicap here." Nathan glanced at the outer office where the two agents, Decker and Chisholm were sitting playing cards. "We've got these two jokers here, I have more down in security, and they've yet to discover anything about this guy that will help us, which is probably a good thing because they'd just fuck things up and get Katie killed and call her collateral damage."

My computer dinged with an incoming email, but I didn't care. Business for me was on hold while all this was going on. I didn't care if my stockholders were pissing their pants about me not acquiring another business and letting the ones that I had put bids on expire. I just couldn't focus on business with Katie missing. Audra had stepped in, taking on most of it, doing things as she thought I would handle them, she'd been with me long enough to guess how I'd handle things. So, figuring it was some business enquiry, I forward it to her without even looking at it.

Two minutes later, Audra rushed into my office, her laptop in hand. Her eyes were filled with tears and her hands were shaking. "You need to see this," she said softly.

"What is it?" I frowned at her as she set the laptop down on my desk.

Nathan joined us and pushed the play button on the video message.

It looked like cellphone footage. It entered a room, and sobbing could be heard, the sound made my heart race as I looked from Nathan to Audra to back to the video. The cellphone panned over the floor to a prone figure, one who looked a lot like Mason. It zoomed in on the face and I knew it was indeed Mason, but he looked dead and then the phone video confirmed it with the black and purpling bruising around Mason's neck. From the body on the floor the phone panned upwards toward a bed, where Katie sat, her face a mask of anger as tears slid down her cheeks.
